Paralympics Come to Ridgeway

On Tuesday 21st June, we went into the hall for PE but we were surpised to find out what we were going to do! It wasn't an ordinary PE lesson, it was a sport from the Paralympics. It was called Goalball.

How to play:
1. Each player should have a blindfold so they can't see.
2. With your blindfold on, roll a special ball [with a bell inside] towards the goal.
3. Use your ears to try to save the ball.

We hope you enjoy it as much as we did! Thank you Charlotte from Premier Sports!

Queen's 90th Birthday Garden Party

On Friday 17th June, we decorated bunting and flags ready for the Birthday celebrations at Lunchtime. When they were ready, Aayan, Brooke and Alan went to hang them up in the hall. At lunchtime, we had a picnic lunch sat on blankets in the hall. The afternoon was the best because we got to have an ice cream from the ice cream van! What a fun day we all had!

A letter from the Mayor!

As you know last half term we visited Sherwood Forest as part of our 'Fantastic Forests' topic. When we returned to school we learnt that Sherwood Forest was set to be demolished to make space for a theme park with hundreds of rides. We worked very hard that week to think of reasons why we should save Sherwood Forest. We even wrote persuasive letters to the Mayor of Derby and the Mayor of Newark to get their help! Here is the reply we received from the Mayor of Newark...

'Dear Year 2,

SHERWOOD FOREST
Thank you for your letter outlining the project that your children have undertaken following their trip to Sherwood Forest.
As a person who was born and has spent most of his life in Nottingham I am very proud of our heritage and Robin Hood is a symbolic feature that is recognisable the world over.
Whilst a new theme park would, no doubt, bring many jobs to the area and provide a boost to the local economy, I agree with the views of the children that the negative impact of such a development significantly outweigh the benefits.
The loss of the natural environment with an historic woodland, containing so many amazing trees that are centuries old could, perhaps, be described as an act of modern day vandalism. The woodland has remained untouched for hundreds of years and it should be protected for future generations to come who, like your children, can explore and re-live what lie would have been like for Robin Hood.
On a personal note when I was a young boy (50 years ago) I visited the Major Oak with my grandma & Grandad. At that time it was possible o get close to the Major Oak and explore the splits in the trunk, where it is thought Robin Hood may have hidden. My lasting memory of the visit was seeing my grandad get stuck in the tree; as he was a bit too fat to fit through the split. This may have led to the increased protection for the tree from the many people who visit it each year!
Whilst there is always a balance to be stuck between progress, new building & new investments and the loss of landscape, natural habitat or heritage; the loss of the site would not be acceptable and the idea of a theme park should be re-located to one of the many sites nearby that are still empty and redundant following the closure of the many coal mines that existed in that part of Nottinghamshire.
In summary I, the Town Mayor, am fully behind your campaign to protect Sherwood Forest for the future, good luck and best wishes.

Yours Sincerely
Cllr R Crowe
Town Mayor.  '

We were extremely excited to receive a letter of support from the Mayor of Newark and hopefully Sherwood Forest will no longer be destroyed.

Save Sherwood!

Do you want Sherwood Forest to be demolished and be turned into a theme park? Well you shouldn’t. How disappointing it will be! There are plans to get rid of Sherwood Forest and build a theme park instead.
All the damage that causes trouble will destroy Sherwood Forest! Lots of animals will die!!! Also people will hear loads of noise pollution. How noisy and smelly it will be!

So please come and help us to SAVE SHERWOOD!

SAVE SHERWOOD FOREST!

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, we have very sad news for you! Sherwood Forest is going to shut down and turn into a theme park! How sad that is for us!  The Major oak tree will be destroyed with all of its history. Also, people will not know many facts about Robin Hood because his merry men won’t be there.

Dance!

On Tuesday 9th February, we watched  a professional dancer called Ashley from 'West End in Schools' show us all of his dancing skills. We then got to practice some different dances from over the years!

I liked it when he said Rock and Roll because we had to jump on our partners back! It was good fun! - Kuri.

I am part of the celebration of dance team so it was good fun and I also learned some new tips on how to be a better dancer! - Olivi.

I liked it when he did some funny movements because it made me laugh. Instead of walking in little steps, he walked in long steps with a funny face! - Ajay.

STEM Day 3

On Wednesday 3rd February 2016 we we started to think about developing our new outdoor shaded area as part of STEM Day 3. Later on we tested some materials with a torch to see which one would be best to make it by thinking about how much light they let through. We used the words transparent, opaque and translucent when describing how much light they block.

Arghhhhh! From the Salty Seadogs!

Last Wednesday on the 20th of January we had a special Pirate Day at school where we all dressed up as scary Pirates! Some of our costumes had swords, skulls and eyepatches.

In the morning we were shocked to see a real Pirate come into school called Captain Burrwash who told us about Pirates like Blackbeard and Anne Bonney. Did you know that Blackbeards real name was Edward Teach? After the assembly Captain Burrwash visited our classroom to show us how a Pirates weapons work. He showed us a pistol, an axe, a roundshot and even a grenade. 'It was interesting and amazing' - Brooke. It was a little bit scary though because some of the weapons were very big and sharp!

In the afternoon we made scary Jolly Rodger flags for Captain Burrwash to put on his new ship. We decorated our flags with skulls, snakes and flames. We also had to make some posters for Captain Burrwash to advertise for a new crew for him.

To end the day we had another assembly where we showed Captain Burrwash our flags and posters to help him with his quest to find a new ship. Our Pirate day was FANTASTIC!

The grand opening!

Last week we were very excited because we found out that our Sensation Activation project was in full swing and it was time to open our Sensory Square. In school we had the chance to have some special V.I.P guests from Rolls-Royce to cut the red, shiny ribbon.

Everyone in school surrounded the Sensory Square in one big crowd to watch the grand opening and see all the new features that have been put in. We got the chance to help with the final designs for the square by measuring the pathways and deciding on the best materials to use.We decided on cobbles, fake grass, logs, ropes and some tiles for lots of different textures and things to move on.

When the time came to open our new Sensory Square, Miss Coburn cut the ribbon with one of the V.I.P guests and we were all really joyful and delighted that that we will finally get to try all the different materials and use our Sensory Square!

School Council's Trip to the Council Chambers!

Today School Council visited the Derby City Council Chambers. We were feeling so very excited to go somewhere we had never been before and to see where the Council meet. 'I was a bit scared because I thought it might be very big' - Alan.

When we arrived it was so windy that our hair blew left and right! Then we looked at the wooden doors outside that were very special because they were used for the old entrance to the Council Chambers. Next we went inside the building and we had to wait patiently for our turn to look around. A lady from the council showed us into a gigantic room where the Councillors have their meetings and went and fetched the Mayor to meet us all. The Mayor was very friendly and we asked him lots of questions like 'why does the meeting room need to be so big?'.

After that we were lucky enough to have a School Council meeting in the Chamber where we discussed how to create shaded places in school. Next the Mayor took us on a V.I.P tour of his office where there was lots of pictures of famous people like Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth I.

'I really enjoyed this trip because it was my first time visiting the Council Chambers and I found out lots about the Mayor' - Kalpriya.
